Every gym has its own culture, but Australian commercial gyms share a set of unwritten rules that experienced gym-goers follow without thinking. If you are new, returning after a break, or just want to make sure you are not the person everyone is quietly annoyed at, this guide covers the basics.
Rule 1: Keep Your Gear Off the Floor
This is the one that most people miss, and it affects everyone around you. When your bag is on the floor, it takes up space someone else needs. When it is on a bench, it takes up equipment. When it is on a shelf, it is blocking storage that is meant for everyone.
A compact bag that attaches to the rack or bench you are training at takes up zero floor space, zero bench space, and zero shelf space. It is the cleanest setup in the gym.
Rule 2: Wipe Down Equipment Before and After Use
Most Australian gyms have cleaning stations with spray bottles and paper towels or microfibre cloths. The expectation is that you wipe down equipment after you use it. Experienced gym-goers also wipe it down before they use it.
Wiping after use is courtesy. Wiping before use is self-protection. If you want the full research on why that matters, read our article on gym hygiene and bacteria.
Rule 3: Don’t Hoard Equipment
Supersetting is fine. Using three pieces of equipment at once during peak hours is not. If the gym is busy, be aware of how much space and equipment you are occupying.
Rule 4: Re-rack Your Weights
Every plate you put on a bar, every dumbbell you pick up, every kettlebell you use. Re-rack it when you are done. This is non-negotiable in Australian gym culture.

Checking your phone between sets is fine. Sitting on a piece of equipment scrolling for five minutes is not. If you need a longer break, step away from the equipment so someone else can use it.
Keep your phone accessible but not in the way. A bag that keeps your phone at arm’s reach without putting it on shared equipment is the cleanest solution.
Rule 6: Respect Personal Space
Australian gym culture is generally non-confrontational. People are there to train, not to socialise. If someone has headphones in, they are not looking for a conversation. If you need to ask to work in, wait until they have finished their set and ask politely.
Rule 7: Be Aware of Your Noise
Controlled breathing during heavy lifts is normal. Screaming on every rep is not. Dropping weights from height when a controlled lower is possible is not. Australian commercial gyms are shared spaces, and the noise you make affects everyone around you.
The One Piece of Kit That Makes All of This Easier
A lot of gym etiquette comes down to being aware of the space you are taking up and the impact you are having on the people around you. A compact magnetic gym bag that attaches to your equipment rather than sitting on the floor or a bench is one of the simplest ways to improve your setup and your standing in the gym.
