If you have seen someone at the gym with a bag snapped onto the squat rack and wondered what it is, you are not alone. Magnetic gym bags are a relatively new category, and the concept sounds simple enough: a bag with a magnetic base that attaches to steel gym equipment.
But the questions people ask before buying are reasonable. Does the magnet damage your phone? Will it actually hold during a session? Is it worth spending around $80 when a regular gym bag costs half that?
This is an honest review. We will cover how the technology works, who it is actually for, and where it falls short.
How a Magnetic Gym Bag Works
The concept is straightforward. A magnetic gym bag has a neodymium magnet embedded in its base. When you press the base of the bag against a steel surface, the magnet creates a hold strong enough to keep the bag in place during normal gym use.
The key word is steel. Magnetic gym bags only work on ferromagnetic surfaces. That means squat racks, power cages, cable machines, benches with steel frames, and dumbbell racks. They do not work on aluminium, plastic, wood, or surfaces with thick non-magnetic coating.
Most commercial gym equipment in Australia is steel. If you train at F45, Snap Fitness, Jetts, Anytime Fitness, or Virgin Active, you are almost certainly training on compatible equipment.
Does the Magnet Damage Your Phone?
This is the most common question, and the honest answer is: it depends on the bag.
A bare neodymium magnet placed near a phone can interfere with wireless charging, affect compass calibration, and in rare cases affect older magnetic card strips. This is why magnet shielding matters.
HoldIt uses a shielded neodymium base. The shielding directs the magnetic field away from the bag’s interior, which means your phone, cards, and electronics are protected. HoldIt has tested this with all major phone brands including iPhone and Samsung. There are no reported cases of phone damage from HoldIt’s shielded magnet.

A magnetic gym bag is not for everyone. It makes the most sense if you train at a commercial gym with steel equipment, currently put your bag on the floor or on a bench, and want your phone accessible between sets without it sitting on a shared surface.
It probably is not for you if you train exclusively at a home gym with aluminium or wooden equipment, need to carry a full change of clothes, or primarily do cardio and do not need equipment access during your session.
How Strong Is the Hold?
HoldIt holds up to 4kg. In practice, that is your phone, keys, wallet, earphones, grips, straps, and a 1.3L water bottle simultaneously. The hold is strong enough that the bag stays in place during sets, but easy enough to remove when you need to move stations.
On smooth uprights with a very heavy load, there can be some shifting. For best hold, keep the weight centred and avoid swinging the bag. On most commercial gym equipment, the hold is solid.
